Hard Floor Care – Protecting With Matting
Maintaining a clean, attractive floor, whether it be resilient, wood,
hard, carpet or synthetic, is enhanced by a sound matting program.
Properly placed mats constructed from the right materials will be
helpful in preventing the tracking of abrasive dirt and soil onto the
floor.
The placement of mats will depend on traffic patterns and traffic
sources; however, some general guidelines should be followed in planning
a matting program that will give adequate protection of the floor.
For mats to work, they must be long enough to catch at least two
footsteps with each foot. The longer the mat, the better.
The outside mats need to be coarse to clean shoes and catch the larger
particles of dirt.
A popular inside mat is a spun rubber mat that traps a lot of sand and
fine dust.
A nylon mat located just inside the door of the building will pull off
additional gritty dust and excess moisture before stepping on the floor.
The mats should be cleaned daily with a vacuum cleaner and cleaned
periodically as needed with a detergent. If a germicide is needed for
cleaning the mats for a hospital, nursing home or school, a quaternary
ammonium product should be added to your list of cleaning equipment.

recommendations.
