Hard Floor Care – Brick Flooring Brick flooring usually consists of clay, either vitreous or semi-vitreous. Sand, lime and concrete bricks are also sometimes used for flooring. Some bricks are manufactured with a rough side to improve slip resistance qualities. Bricks are laid either flat or on edge, generally on a sand and cement screed over a concrete sub-floor. Colors are usually rather drab. They are noisy, cold to walk on, very abrasion resistant and hard wearing. Bricks are especially highly resistant to compression and impact shock when laid on edge. The chemical resistance of bricks is very good with the grout being the area of concern. Bricks can become slippery when wet. Maintenance of Brick Flooring: Normal maintenance should be carried out by sweeping, followed by washing with a solution of neutral detergent in water. A particularly dirty floor can be scrubbed with a scouring powder and warm water. Soap should not be used, as it tends to form a scum which could cause slippery conditions. Sealing is not generally recommended for brick floors. However, if a seal is desired for the grout, two coats of a water-based acrylic seal would do well. Solvent-based waxes should not be used as they might cause the floor to become slippery, particularly when wet. Rough brick surfaces may harbor dirt unless they are cleaned regularly. This should be done with a floor polishing/scrubbing machine, a deck scrub brush, or hose and water.
