Restroom Care: Preventative Restroom Care
Restroom Care: Preventative Restroom Care Restrooms are one of the most critical areas in building maintenance. The quality of care and sanitation gives an impression to the general public and employees about the company or organization. People tend to be more careful about discarding trash in a clean restroom. A dirty area breeds disrespect and leads to further disorder. The most important consideration in restroom care is infection control. Restrooms can harbor more human disease, bacteria and potential health problems than other areas of the building. A properly cleaned and sanitized restroom is far less likely to cause cross contamination or the development of offensive odors. Sanitizing restrooms requires the proper combination of procedures. This includes waste pickup, servicing dispensers, dusting, wet mopping and the disinfecting procedures needed to maintain proper cleanliness and sanitation. Protect yourself You need to know what hazards you will face and how to protect yourself against them before you enter a restroom. Make sure you understand the products you will be using. Protect yourself. Always read the labels, follow directions and be knowledgeable about the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). The MSDS’s are required by law to be accessible to you. Know where they are filed in your area. Identify any hazardous materials and obtain the proper protective equipment. Use proper techniques to perform tasks and be familiar with appropriate emergency procedures. If you ever have any questions about the products, ask the manufacturer. Be sure the manufacturer provides on-site training (In-Service Education). Protect Mankind The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard is in effect in ALL industries. This rule is intended to help employers keep their employees safe. It says you should know what hazards you face on the job and how to protect yourself against those hazards. In fact, the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard has become known as the “Right To Know” Law. The manufacturer of the product needs to be brought into your facility to an In-Service Presentation on the Hazard Communication Standard. The Hazard Communication Standard says you have a “Right To Know” about chemical hazards where you work. But remember, hazard communication can protect you only if you: • Read labels and follow the directions • Know where to find the information about your chemicals • Follow instructions and respect warnings • Use proper protective clothing and equipment when handling hazardous substances • Know what to do in an emergency • Use common sense and work safely
