Programmed Carpet Maintenance
Programmed Maintenance:
Many housekeeping and maintenance personnel fear carpet maintenance on
the simple basis that they think it is more difficult than resilient
floor maintenance. Actually, carpet care and floor maintenance are much
the same…then both consist of cleaning steps whose basic purposes are
most identical. A planned routine maintenance program is the key to
great looking carpet, just like resilient flooring.
No
one would consider dust mopping and spray buffing alone to be an
effective resilient floor maintenance program. Case in point, simply
vacuuming and removing spots from carpeting proves ineffective for total
carpet maintenance. The following chart helps compare various cleaning
procedures with those of resilient floor maintenance:
|
Purpose |
Carpet |
Resilient Floor |
|
Remove Loose Surface Soil |
Vacuum |
Dust Mop |
|
Remove Tougher Soils |
Spot Clean/Bonnet Buff |
Damp Mop/Spray Buff |
|
Remove Ground-In Soil |

Using correct procedures and chemicals will insure maximum appearance of
your carpets at all times, maximize the life of your carpets and save
you money. Programmed maintenance will assure you of attractive looking
carpets at all times. Programmed maintenance is simply scheduling
various carpet care tasks on a timely basis: vacuuming, spot cleaning,
interim cleaning and deep cleaning/restoration and following through on
a daily basis. This will prevent the build-up of soil and reduce
abrasion to carpets.
Deep Cleaning/Restoration:
Using correct procedures and chemicals can frequently restore the poor
appearance of carpets and substantially prolong the useful life of the
carpets. Even the dirtiest and most stained carpets can often be
restored and/or re-stretched. Compared to replacement costs, it is
inexpensive to find out if your carpets can be satisfactorily restored.
Helpful Hints:
Always test cleaning agents on an inconspicuous area of the carpet for
possible fiber damage or color change.
For aged spots, spray chemical on spot and let the spotter stand longer
for more effective removal.
Always avoid over-wetting.
Avoid excessive rubbing, as it may cause unsightly distortion of carpet
fibers.
Use caution when working with flammable solvents
Follow appropriate safety precautions and label directions when using
spotting chemicals.
Always use only white, absorbent cloth when blotting spots.
Whatever procedure you are using, always gather the recommended
janitorial equipment and supplies together and bring to the area to be
cleaned. And allow time to clean up and return the cleaning equipment
to the storage area when the procedure is completed.
