Scouring pads come in all shapes, sizes, types and grades. The most common types of scouring pads are known as scrubbing soap pads and are made from abrasive steel strands that can make cleaning baked on products an easy task. These types of soap pads come in grades which are measured from fine to coarse; fine being less abrasive and coarse being the most abrasive. Soap pads are treated with a gel, liquid or powder soap that comes alive when it contacts water. The soap helps to break through grease and tough grime. An industry standard for the color coding of these scouring pads is that the darker the color the more abrasive the scouring pad. Steel wool pads also come without soap for application were water and soap cannot be used. Some scouring pads also come with a sponge built in. One side of the pad is abrasive and the other side is a sponge. This type of scouring pad works great for residential use.
