Procedure For Whirlpool Bath Cleaning

Procedure For Whirlpool Bath Cleaning

Recommended Supplies and Cleaning Equipment:
All Purpose Detergent Cleaner
EPA Registered Cleaner/Disinfectant
Acid Lime Remover
Wiping Material – Rags, Paper Towels, Sponge, etc.
Long Handled Brush
Rubber Gloves
Goggles

Recommended Method: Wall Mop and Handle:

As in all cleaning procedures, the first step is to gather the recommended janitorial equipment and supplies together and bring to the area to be cleaned.

NOTE: If the whirlpool bath is in poor condition with soil and lime build-up, do the following procedure before using the disinfectant:

Use acid lime remover to clean plumbing and fixtures free of mineral deposits. Use a sponge or brush.

Use all-purpose detergent cleaner to remove heavy soil contamination from the surface areas of the whirlpool bath. Tub should be 1/3 full with water.

After the initial cleaning, thoroughly rinse all surface areas of the whirlpool bath, plumbing and fixtures with clear water. Drain whirlpool bath.

The next procedure will involve disinfecting the whirlpool bath using an EPA registered cleaner/disinfectant.

WHEN CLEANING A WHIRLPOOL BATH:

Fill the tub 1/3 full with clean, clear water. Add EPA registered cleaner/disinfectant in proportion to the number of gallons of water that have been placed into the bath. This will give the proper dilution
(example: ½, 1 or 2 ounces of germicide per gallon of water in the bath).

Using a long handled brush, apply the germicidal solution to all areas of the bath (sides, rims, etc.). Turn on the pump and allow it to pull a portion of the solution in the bath into the lines, reservoir and jets. Stop the pump and allow the solution to remain in the lines, jets and reservoir for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, using the solution in the whirlpool bath, clean the outside surfaces, including plumbing and fixtures.

After the 10 minute surface exposure time, start the pump and circulate the solution through the system a few times (2 or 3 times). Be aware that the solution agitation by the pump will produce a very large amount of foam.

Drain germicide solution from the whirlpool bath.

Rinse areas of the whirlpool bath (which will come in contact with the patient) with clean, clear water two times. Also circulate clean, clear water through the system two times.

Inspect your work. Repeat procedure(s) if necessary.

Allow time to clean up and return the cleaning equipment to the storage area.

Finally, when you are finished, wash hands and dry thoroughly.
