Procedure For Window Cleaning And Cleaning Equipment List

Procedure For Window Cleaning

Recommended Supplies and Cleaning Equipment:
Window Cleaning Solution
Window Squeegee – 12”
Window Brush
Synthetic or Natural Sponge
10 Quart Pail
Chamois – 18” x 24”
Turkish Towel
Telescoping/Extension Aluminum Poles
Razor Blade Scraper

Recommended Method:
As in all cleaning procedures, the first step is to gather the recommended janitorial equipment and supplies together and bring to the area to be cleaned.
Work in the shade or on cloudy days (avoid direct sun, if possible).
WET GLASS. Apply cleaning solution with sponge or brush. Humid weather requires less solution.
REMOVE STUBBORN SOIL. Use a razor blade scraper to remove paint, tar, wax, graffiti, etc. To prevent scratching the glass, first wet it with the cleaning solution.
SCRUB GLASS. Scrub vigorously with brush or wet sponge. Pick up dirt around frame of window with sponge or towel.
FIRST SQUEEGEE STROKE. Start at the top left corner of window. Angle squeegee to that about two to six inches of blade touches glass. Draw Squeegee along top edge of window. Wipe squeegee blade with chamois.
NEXT SQUEEGEE STROKES. Start on dry surface in left or right-hand top corner. Draw squeegee down to last four to eight inches at bottom of glass. Repeat this stroke until you have squeegeed across entire window. Be sure to overlap each stroke. Don’t use excessive pressure. Wipe blade clean with sponge after each stroke.
REMOVE EXCESS WATER. Soak up water at bottom of window with sponge. Wash chamois in cleaning solution when dirty. Wring out as dry as possible before reusing.
LAST SQUEEGEE STROKE. Start at bottom of window. Draw squeegee across remaining uncleaned glass.

CLEAN FRAME. Sponge (or towel dry) the bottom window frame. Wipe the side frames if needed.

Inspect your work. Repeat procedure(s) if necessary.
Allow time to clean up and return the cleaning equipment to the storage area.
Finally, when you are finished, wash hands and dry thoroughly.

COMMENTS:

Be sure to wipe blade with sponge, chamois or towel after every stroke.

Outside windows may require much more cleaning solution, due to quicker drying.

On LARGE windows or under very dry conditions, wet and squeegee the upper half of the window glass first. Always start to squeegee close to the frame. Then do the lower half. Be sure that your first stroke is made with the squeegee angled as described previously.

Use an extension pole on HIGH windows.

On LARGE, HIGH windows, you may need to wet and squeegee the left or right half of the window first. Then do the remaining half. Be careful to angle and overlap the clean blade (2” to 4”) into the previously cleaned and dry area.

Avoid, if possible, doing windows in direct, hot sunlight (to prevent streaking or glass fracture).
